I often thought I was born in the wrong decade.

I fantasied about living in the early 1900’s and began painting from old home movies of my grandmother’s dating back to the 1920s. It influenced my painting style, colors, and subjects. The more I painted the past, the farther from the present I drifted. My kids were growing up and changing but I was busy painting the my father and grandmother who had both passed away many years ago.

One day, in 2016, it all changed. My kids became my subjects and my paintings and style evolved. As I paint my kids today, they continue to grow and change and time keeps passing quicker and quicker making it hard to keep up.

Shelly Safir Marolt graduated from Hamilton College with a B.A. in theatre. She spent 8 years working in fashion, traveling around the globe for a French company before she relocated to Aspen in 1989 where she started exploring her interest in visual art, studying primarily at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass Village, Colorado. She continued her studies at the National Academy School of Fine Arts in New York City, and participated in ICSCIS Studio Italia Course in 2006.

Shelly also continues to pursue her interest in theatre, acting in local productions in Aspen. The influence of theatre can be seen in her work as she tries to portray the personalities of her subjects as if she were dissecting a character for a play.
